History
In the 1870s, wood mills and logging powered the economy that would bring the town of Land O’Lakes to life. Formerly known as Stateline (Being that it was located along the state line of Wisconsin and Michigan,) the town of Land O’Lakes has seen many changes over the years, though many of the founding families still thrive in the area generations later.
Of course, logging still is and always will be an important part of any north woods economy, some of the businesses that attract tourists today got their start in the earlier days of the logging industry. Bent’s Camp, which is a popular for its cabin rentals, lake access, and restaurant and bar, was originally a logging camp in1893. In 1896, it began functioning as a tourist camp as the timber cleared out in the area needed time to regenerate. Throughout the early 20th century, more resorts and inns were built, including the historical Gateway Lodge built by Detroit radio and theatre magnate John King in 1938. Over the decades, it has been expanded upon and changed hands many times, but is still a popular place for tourists today.
